Pre-game:
Referee - Responsible for checking the score book and tossing the
ball to begin the game.
Umpire #1 - Responsible for the toss, and observing home team during warm up.
Umpire #2 - Responsible for the 8 non-jumpers, and observing visiting team during warm up.
Jump Ball:
If ball goes right from the toss, U2 becomes Lead; U1 becomes
Center; and Referee becomes Trail.
If ball goes left from the toss, U1 becomes Lead; U2 becomes Center; and Referee becomes
Trail.
Court Coverage:
When a rotation occurs:
1. The ball penetrates the free-throw line extended and settles
opposite the Lead.
2. All officials must remain aware of the ball and players as well as the other officials'
positions.
3. The Lead dictates the start of a rotation.
The Lead official
1. Works primarily midway between the near lane line and where
the 3-point line meets the endline.
2. Option to rotate ball side when the ball penetrates the free-throw line extended and
settles.
3. Always doubles a sideline throw-in.
4. Responsible for primary area, entire endline, and three second violations.
The Center Official
1. Works between a step below the free throw line extended and
the top of the circle,
2. After Lead rotates into position, rotate to new Trail.
3. Responsible for primary area, sideline from endline to endline, basket interference and
goaltending, 5 second closely guarded counts, and assists in observing three second
violations.
The Trail Official
1. Works in the mid-court area, primarily near the 28 foot line.
2. When Lead initiates a rotation, rotate to new Center.
3. Administers all throw-ins in the backcourt.
4. Responsible for primary area, sideline from endline to endline, backcourt endline,
basket interference and goaltending, 5 second closely guarded counts, 10 seconds counts in
backcourt, and assists in observing three second violations.
All Officials should maintain the semblance of a wide
triangle coverage and should be moving into the proper positions as the ball moves around
the court and after each change of possession.

Throw-ins
Throw-ins From The Backcourt
1. All throw-ins in the backcourt are administered by the new
Trail.
2. Center stays to help Trail and positions himself 1-2 steps ahead of the ball. If the
ball goes out of bounds in the backcourt on Center's side of the court, Center becomes new
Lead.
Sideline Throw-ins
1. All sideline throw-ins are handled by the Trail.
2. Lead doubles the sideline.
Endline Throw-ins
1. Frontcourt: Handled by the Lead, takes a position
between the player and the near lane line.
2. Backcourt: Handled by the Trail, takes a position between the player and the
near sideline.
Time-out Positioning
1. Official granting the time out reports it to the table.
2. The official responsible for the throw-in or free throw administration keeps the ball
at the spot.

Fouls And Free Throw
Administration - Switches
1. The calling official reports the foul in the designated area
and moves to a position opposite the table. Go around the players.
2. When the calling official goes opposite the table, could become Center, Trail, or Lead.
3. If the official opposite the table is not the calling official, that official takes the
position of the calling official. (ie. The calling official and the official opposite the
table switch positions.)
4. If the official opposite the table is the calling official, there is no exchange.
5. The non-calling official who is not opposite the table will hold position.
6. Calling official always administers free throws on shooting fouls.
Technical Fouls
1. Official who calls it, administers first free throw by any
free throw shooter.
2. Official on the endline is the new Lead official.
3. The third official will take a position at center court (in front of the scorer's
table).
Last-Second Shot Responsibilities
Regardless of position (Trail or Center), the official opposite
the table has responsibility for making the call on any last-second shot unless given up
by prior agreement. The Referee will make the final decision in case of disagreement
between the officials.
