Two Person Mechanics Outline

 

 

 

   
Pre-game:

Referee - Responsible for checking the score book and tossing the ball to begin the game.
Umpire - Responsible for observing home team during warm up, observing the toss to begin the game as well as the 8 non-jumpers.

Jump Ball:

Umpire goes in the direction of the ball and becomes the Lead; and Referee becomes Trail.

Court Coverage:

The Lead official may decide to go ball side when:

1. The ball penetrates the free-throw line extended and settles opposite the Lead.
2. Both officials must remain aware of the ball and players as well as the other official's position.

The Lead official

1. Works primarily midway between the near lane line and where the 3-point line meets the endline.
2. Option to go ball side when the ball penetrates the free-throw line extended and settles.
3. Always positions opposite for a sideline throw-in.
4. Responsible for primary area, endline and near sideline, 5 second closely guarded counts, and three second violations.

The Trail Official

1. Works in the mid-court area, primarily near the 28 foot line.
2. If Lead goes ball side, Trail covers the perimeter.
3. Administers all throw-ins in the backcourt.
4. Responsible for primary area, near sideline, backcourt endline, basket interference and goaltending, 5 second closely guarded counts, 10 seconds counts in backcourt, and assists in observing three second violations.

Both Officials should maintain the semblance of a wide coverage area and should be moving into the proper positions as the ball moves around the court and after each change of possession.

Throw-ins

Throw-ins From The Backcourt

1. All throw-ins in the backcourt are administered by the new Trail.
2. Lead may stay to help Trail if there is defensive pressure.

Sideline Throw-ins

1. All sideline throw-ins are handled by the Trail.
2. Lead positions opposite the Trail

Endline Throw-ins

1. Frontcourt: Handled by the Lead, takes a position between the player and the near sideline.
2. Backcourt: Handled by the Trail, takes a position between the player and the near sideline.

Time-out Positioning

1. Official granting the time can report it or relay it to his/her partner.
2. The official responsible for the throw-in or free throw administration keeps the ball at the spot.
3. Officials not with the ball...

bullet(Full time-out) ...takes a position on the mid-court line midway between the center circle and the sideline opposite the table.
bullet(20-sec. time-out) ...takes a position on the mid-court line midway between the table sideline and the center circle.

Fouls And Free Throw Administration - Switches

1. The calling official reports the foul in the designated area and switches positions with his/her partner. Go around the players.

Technical Fouls

1. Officials switch positions and the new Trail administers first free throw by any free throw shooter.
2. Official on the endline is the new Lead official.
3. After the first free throw, the Trail official will take a position that will allow him/her to observe all the non-shooting players.

Last-Second Shot Responsibilities

The Trail official has responsibility for making the call on any last-second shot unless given up by prior agreement. The Referee will make the final decision in case of disagreement between the officials.
